Privacy & Security

Can I use the Xoopit for Gmail extension for Firefox without signing up for the Xoopit service?
Yes! You can use several features, such as Compose Quick Search and Conversation People, without signing up. Just download the plugin and you are good to go. However, to get the full power of searching and browsing all your files, photos and videos, you need an account on the Xoopit service.
Why does the Xoopit service require my Gmail address and password?
Xoopit requires your Gmail address and password in order to find and index the photos, videos and files in your Gmail. We understand that your security and privacy are of critical importance, and your trust is not something we take lightly. We use industry best practices to encrypt and store this data. Xoopit works like other mail clients that connect to Gmail, such as your desktop mail program or cell phone. For the technical folks out there, when Gmail supports AuthSub or OAuth, we will support this system so Xoopit can connect to your Gmail without requiring your credentials. Please continue reading to learn more about how Xoopit works.
What does Xoopit do with my Gmail account?
Xoopit will electronically read and index your mail, and for some features will gather your Gmail contacts. We do not change, move or delete any of your mail. At the time you sign up for the service, Xoopit will enable the IMAP feature on your Gmail account if it is not already enabled, which will allow us to index your mail securely.
How does Xoopit connect with Gmail?
Xoopit uses IMAP over a secure connection when talking to Gmail. When sending an email, Xoopit uses a secure connection to talk the SMTP protocol to Google. Xoopit will sometimes use Google's web services to retrieve contact information, also over a secure connection.
What data does Xoopit store, and how is it stored?
Xoopit only indexes email that contain useful data such as photos, videos, or files. For each of these emails, Xoopit stores a representation of the text of mail for fast searching, thumbnail versions of attached images, and information about remote images and videos (e.g. location of URL, title, etc). Xoopit does not store file attachments by default. (Note that if you turn on indexing of attachments, then Xoopit stores the text of documents that it indexes.) We continue to reduce what Xoopit stores. Xoopit may, however, index other types of data in the future to offer more features.

Xoopit stores your data securely in professionally-operated datacenters. We also have a rigorous internal policy designed to avoid your data being tampered with, or viewed by anyone but you.
Does Xoopit respect Gmail's security settings?
Yes. If you are using Gmail with secure HTTPS, Xoopit will too. You can also set Xoopit to always use HTTPS at the Xoopit Account Settings page or in the Xoopit tab of the Gmail settings page.
By using Xoopit, am I giving Xoopit any license to content in my email?
All content in your email is yours. When using Xoopit you still retain all copyright and other rights to this information. Xoopit has features that allow you to share or publish content to external places, and other rights and terms will apply, depending on the situation.
Does Xoopit sell or do other commercial things with my data?
Your data is your data. Xoopit does not sell your data. We may show advertisements inside the Xoopit application in the future, just like other webmail and Internet applications. These advertisements may rely on aggregate and/or non-personally identifying information to display ads to you.
How do I delete my account?
You may delete your account at any time at the Xoopit Account Settings page or in the Xoopit tab of the Gmail settings page. We ask you your password to confirm the delete. Your account will immediately be deactivated. After one hour (in case you change your mind — write us!), all of your account's information will be deleted from Xoopit servers.
Where can I find out more?
Please see Xoopit's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information on the practice described here.
